Soaring Above Lantau: Two Decades of Ngong Ping 360

Lantau Island has long held a distinct place in Hong Kong’s identity. Far removed from the high-density skyscraper canyons of Hong Kong Island and Kowloon, Lantau offers vast stretches of country parks, quiet coastlines, and rugged mountainous terrain. High upon the misty plateau of Ngong Ping sits Po Lin Monastery, a spiritual sanctuary founded in the early 20th century, alongside the awe-inspiring Tian Tan Buddha—the world-renowned bronze statue seated atop a lotus throne since 1993.

For decades, making the pilgrimage to this highland sanctuary was an adventure in itself. Visitors relied on long, winding mountain bus routes along narrow roads, or tackled steep hiking trails that demanded hours of foot travel. While these journeys held a rustic charm, they severely limited accessibility for families, elderly travelers, and time-conscious international visitors.

Conception: Connecting Hong Kong to Its Spiritual Heart

By 1998, with the opening of Hong Kong International Airport on neighboring Chek Lap Kok and the rapid growth of Tung Chung New Town, the potential to turn Lantau into a major tourist destination became clear. The Hong Kong Government tasked the MTR Corporation with exploring a continuous aerial link to connect the urban hub of Tung Chung directly to the Ngong Ping plateau.

 

The concept was ambitious: create an aerial ropeway spanning nearly six kilometers over open water, country park forests, and sharp mountain peaks. The goal was not merely to build a transport link, but to craft an unforgettable journey—a scenic flyover showcasing the dramatic natural beauty of North Lantau Country Park alongside Hong Kong’s modern engineering feats.

Construction: Terrain, Weather, and Canadian Mules

Construction officially began in October 2002. Executing a mega-project across protected country parks presented complex engineering, environmental, and geological challenges. To design and build the bi-cable detachable gondola system, MTR Corporation partnered with Italian ropeway specialists Leitner, while civil engineering works were carried out by Japan’s Maeda Corporation alongside lead consultants ARUP and Aedas.

Before a single tower could be erected, engineers faced treacherous ground conditions. The mountain terrain consisted of weathered granite, loose soil, and steep, unstable rock faces. Because standard heavy machinery could not navigate the steep slopes without destroying protected habitats, engineers had to use specialized micro-piling foundation techniques. Equipment was disassembled, airlifted piece by piece to the mountainside, and reassembled on site to anchor the towers deep into the solid bedrock beneath the shifting topsoil.

Because standard cable cars run in a straight line, engineers also faced a unique spatial hurdle near the airport. To avoid entering restricted air traffic corridors, they designed the Airport Island Angle Station—a massive mid-flight station where the cable car executes an unexpected 60-degree turn over the water before climbing up the mountainside.

The strict environmental mandate prohibited carving access roads into the country park, forcing the team to innovate to get 12,000 tons of material up the North Lantau Country Park:

  • Heavy-lift helicopters- with a 4.5t lifting capacity – were brought in from Europe to transport structural steel for the massive support towers. (they were used to lift 10,000 tons of material, but with the limitations of the weather conditions)
  • In a famous piece of project lore, six pack mules were imported from Alberta, Canada. These sure-footed animals carried thousands of tonnes of building materials up narrow, rocky paths, ensuring zero damage to the delicate surrounding flora. (they were used to lift 2,000 tons, with almost no weather conditions limitation)

Built to Withstand the Elements: Engineering for Severe Weather

Beyond the terrain, Lantau’s extreme tropical weather posed a constant challenge during both construction and design. The region is prone to torrential summer monsoon rains, high-altitude lightning, sudden fog, and fierce seasonal typhoons.

To keep the structure safe against the ocean’s elements and high-altitude winds, engineers designed the towers and cable systems to exceed standard civil engineering loads. The entire system was built to withstand out-of-operation typhoon wind forces well over 200 kilometers per hour. The choice of a bi-cable system—where the cabins ride on a heavy, fixed track rope while pulled by a separate haul rope—was specifically selected because it offers far greater stability in gusty side-winds than traditional single-cable systems.

During construction, workers often had to pause operations due to sudden lightning strikes or Black Rainstorm warnings, making site safety and soil stabilization against landslides a round-the-clock priority. Today, the system uses real-time weather stations along the mountain ridge that automatically adjust speed or park cabins safely if winds cross operational thresholds.

Two Decades of Innovation and Success

On September 18, 2006, Ngong Ping 360 welcomed its first passengers, instantly transforming access to Lantau. What had once been a lengthy journey was reduced to a smooth, 25-minute flight above forest canopies and marine waters.

Over the past 20 years, the attraction has continually evolved to keep the experience fresh:

2009 – Crystal Cabins: The fleet was upgraded with glass-bottom floor cabins, giving passengers a thrilling, top-down view of the hiking trails and South China Sea below.

2022 – Crystal+ Cabins: Pushing transparency further, fully clear glass cabins were introduced, offering unobstructed 360-degree panoramas of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge and airport runway.

As Ngong Ping 360 celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2026, it stands as one of Hong Kong’s most beloved attractions—a testament to how thoughtful engineering can harmoniously link cultural heritage with nature.
