FAQ

Is HONG KONG A LA CARTE a certified business?

Yes, it is not legal for city guides to organise and conduct sightseeing tours without being hired by a local travel agency even if they are accredited by the Travel Industry Council (TIC). HONG KONG A LA CARTE holds both a travel agent license (nbr 354230) and employs certified city guides.

Who are HONG KONG A LA CARTE's guides?

Our private guides are people who have lived in Hong Kong for many years and who are very knowledgeable in many topics that will be discussed during the chosen tours. From time to time, we may however ask advisors to join the tour in case expertise is needed. Learn more about our passionate team here!

Am I allowed to film or take photos?

Some venues have strict policies and may refuse the right to take photographs and films. In such premises, guests must adhere to any restrictions that might be in place.

What does the tour include?

All tours are private and will be exclusive to each client. What is included or excluded will be highlighted at quotation/booking time. In general, the guide, access to venues and public transportation will be included. Meals and private vehicles will incur a supplement and liability insurance is not included. Departure times, meeting points and drop off points will be confirmed when bookings are finalized.

What should I wear?

Appropriate clothing and footwear should be worn at all times, especially as Hong Kong weather varies from season to season. Depending on the activities selected, HONG KONG A LA CARTE will also advise what to bring (note that some venues have strict dress codes).

How are the venues, shops, museum, salons and activities selected?

Although HONG KONG A LA CARTE has many connections in Hong Kong, none of them are mandatory. This means our suggested venues are based purely on your wishes, needs and interests. There will be no hidden commissions and forced shopping stops.

How do we travel?

Depending on the activities selected and the number of people joining your party, travel will either be made on foot, by taxis, trams, buses, or using private chauffeured cars or mini buses. All options will be discussed when bookings are made.

Will other clients join my tour?

Unless stipulated in the tour information, all tours are exclusive to you.

Are children welcome?

Yes, children are welcome but they may not be allowed everywhere. Options will be discussed when bookings are made.

How do I book?

Some of our tours can be booked on our website.

Otherwise you can contact us through the website, by sending an email to contact@hkalacarte.com or by calling us at (+852) 2798 9828. A HONG KONG A LA CARTE’s representative will then reach you with options and prices. Bookings will only be considered as confirmed once you have received a written confirmation by HONG KONG A LA CARTE and your payment has been received.

How do I pay?

Clients can pay online (credit card), with cash (Hong Kong dollars only) or by direct Bank Transfer. All bookings must be made in advance and will only be confirmed once payment is received.

How do I know my reservation is confirmed?

Once your payment has been received, a final confirmation will be issued featuring a detailed itinerary, contact details, and cancellation policy.

What is the cancellation policy?

Due to the exclusivity of some of the tours, a strict cancellation policy may apply. This will be specified when the bookings are made but, in most cases, it is expected that full payment will be retained if the clients cancel 14 days or less prior to the start of the tour. In the unlikely event that a cancellation is made by HONG KONG A LA CARTE, you will be refunded in full minus the processing fees. Our Terms and Conditions are available here.

What happens if the weather is bad?

Tours will be canceled in the event of HK Observatory hoisting the Typhoon 8 signal and above or issuing a Black Rain warning. In such cases, tours will either be re-scheduled or refunded in full (minus the processing fees). If the weather is bad but not putting our clients in danger, the team will offer an indoor alternative or a different route for the clients to consider. More information can be found in our Terms and conditions here.

Is it safe to hike in Hong Kong?

Hong Kong offers various trails ranging from easy to difficult. When booking your tour, a representative of HONG KONG A LA CARTE will assess your level of fitness and suggest appropriate routes. All our hiking guides carry a first aid kit but you will remain responsible for ensuring that you are in suitable physical condition for the activities selected.

Do I need Personal Accident Insurance?

HONG KONG A LA CARTE will ensure all hikes and activities are safe. It is however your responsibility to make sure you are covered by a proper travel and health insurance.  All activities are undertaken at your own risk.  HONG KONG A LA CARTE accepts no liability or obligation in the event of illness, injury, death or loss or damage to personal property.  Any medical condition or medication being taken that might affect your health or participation must be notified to HONG KONG A LA CARTE in writing prior to the event and must be accompanied by a doctor’s certificate to verify your fitness. Personal accident insurance is strongly advised.

I have restricted mobility, can I still book a tour?

Absolutely! Whether you book a tour online or offline, best is to send us an email at  contact@hkalacarte.com so that we can discuss the accessibility of the venues you wish to visit with you. Depending on your mobility issue, we will also be able to book a private chauffeured car (a supplement will be added to the original price).
