Exploring Street Art: The Ephemeral World of Space Invaders in Hong Kong

Street art is a vibrant and ever-evolving form of expression, capturing the pulse of urban life and creativity. At Hong Kong a la Carte, we celebrate this art form through our dedicated street art tours, emphasizing its ephemeral nature. One of the most intriguing artists in this realm is Space Invader, also known as Frank Slama.

Who is Space Invader?

Space Invader is a French street artist known for his unique tile mosaics that pay homage to classic Atari video games. His work can be found adorning walls around the globe, even extending into the world of space and sea. This playful homage to retro gaming not only brings a sense of nostalgia but also invites urban explorers to seek out these hidden treasures.

A key aspect of Space Invader’s work is the element of secrecy; discovering his pieces randomly adds to the thrill. In Hong Kong, his mosaic aliens have become part of the urban landscape, turning the city into a playful playground for art lovers and collectors alike.

The Ephemeral Nature of Street Art

One of the most compelling aspects of street art is its short-lived nature. Pieces can disappear overnight due to various factors: removal by authorities, theft by avid fans, or in the case of murals, when covered by new ones. Recently, Hong Kong has witnessed several incidents involving Space Invader’s works.

In Sheung Wan, one piece was stolen and later appeared for sale on a resale platform. Another artwork went missing from La Cabane cellar, and its whereabouts remain unknown. In Tsim Sha Tsui, a piece was partially removed, leading to two arrests. These incidents highlight the precarious existence of street art and the lengths to which some will go to possess a piece of this urban treasure.
