France in Hong Kong

The « made in France » is very much appreciated abroad, in Asia and particularly in Hong Kong where more than 20,000 French citizens are living. Thanks to Hong Kong’s energy and favorable economical environment, French were able to set up diversified businesses importing their à la française know-how: culture, education, gastronomy, art, prêt-à-porter, infrastructure and luxury sectors to name a few.

French presence dates back to 1848 when the Mission Etrangères de Paris asked the Saint Paul de Chartres’ sisters to set up a mission in Hong Kong. While the sisters established schools and hospitals, the French community developed little by little. First came the diplomats, bankers, entrepreneurs followed by the scientists, artists, chefs, innovators and many others. All are still very active nowadays.

Thanks to our local French guides, Hong Kong A La Carte enables you to uncover the Hong Kong à la française: culinary pleasures, improbable encounters, beautiful buildings, the story behind the emblematic Bauhinia flower, the French involvements in the economical development of Hong Kong, all complemented by local anecdotes.
