Kowloon Walled City: A Unique Chapter in the Urban History of Hong Kong
Kowloon Walled City, a fascinating area in Hong Kong, shows us the interesting twists of history, migration, and city life. This crowded settlement was special because it was a part of China right in the middle of the British colony. Its story is one of survival, chaos, and major transformation.

A Unique Enclave
Originally an outpost during the Song Dynasty, Kowloon Walled City became significant in the early 20th century. After the British took control of the New Territories in 1898, the Walled City remained under Chinese jurisdiction, creating a unique situation that attracted many migrants seeking refuge from conflict and poverty.

A Melting Pot of Cultures
Post-World War II, Kowloon Walled City welcomed a wave of migrants from mainland China. With no formal governance, local triads emerged, shaping the area’s social dynamics. Despite its lawless reputation, the community thrived, known for its fishball production and unofficial dental services.

Organic Urbanization
The Walled City developed without planning, resulting in high-density construction and narrow alleyways. Its unique architecture created a bustling environment, where children played among interconnected buildings. Despite chaotic conditions, residents forged strong bonds, sharing experiences and resilience.

The End of an Era
The Walled City’s fate changed with the 1984 Sino-British Joint Declaration, leading to its demolition in 1993. Today, Kowloon Walled City Park stands in its place, preserving remnants of the original structure and symbolizing the evolution of Hong Kong.

A Cinematic Revival
Kowloon Walled City gained renewed interest with the film City of Darkness (Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In), capturing the vibrancy of life within the enclave. Thanks to the movie sets, the “Kowloon Walled City: A Cinematic Journey” exhibition, which opened in May 2025, invites visitors to experience this unique atmosphere.
