Embarquement: Hong Kong

Our Last Shooting Project: “Embarquement” Lands in Hong Kong… again!

After our collaboration in 2024, we were once again thrilled to work with the TV show Embarquement, broadcast on TV5 Monde, with the support of the Hong Kong Government and the professional expertise of Buscardini Communications production house.

Traveling from country to country, Embarquement invites viewers to explore culture and history through iconic—yet sometimes lesser-known—destinations, guided by those who know them best: local experts, professionals, and storytellers.

This year, Hong Kong a la carte proudly supported the promotion of Hong Kong by participating in the campaign through two key locations. The show highlights the city’s rich heritage, vibrant communities, and stunning landscapes through authentic, on-location storytelling.

Shooting in Mirs Bay: Natural Beauty and Local Stories

Hong Kong a la carte took part in the filming in Mirs Bay, a coastline selected as a national “Outstanding Example of Beautiful Bays” by China’s Ministry of Ecology and Environment (2025).

Our filming focus included:

Lai Chi Wo — A Hakka walled village shaped by community and nature
Lai Chi Wo is one of Hong Kong’s oldest, largest, and best-preserved Hakka walled villages, with history dating back around 350 years. At its peak in the mid-20th century, it hosted nearly 1,000 residents across more than 200 houses.
Lai Chi Wo stands out for the way heritage and landscape come together—alongside protected surroundings and rich biodiversity, including mangroves and the area’s notable white-flowered derris forest.

Kat O — Crooked Island and its fishing heritage

Kat O (“Crooked Island”) in Double Haven is defined by its twisted shape and sheltered bays, historically ideal for mooring fishing boats. The island’s maritime heritage is embodied in its remarkable Tin Hau Temple (built 1763).

The island is also closely tied to Hakka and fishermen communities—once home to around 6,000 residents, today about 50 remain. Among them, we met with Dominique Chan, a Franco-Chinese artist based there.

Aberdeen: A Fishing Village Feel, Still Very Much Alive

We also shot in Aberdeen, a vibrant fishing village where the maritime lifestyle remains at the heart of the area’s identity. Special zoom on Ap Lei Chau:

Ap Lei Chau — Hung Shing Temple

Hung Shing Temple was probably built around 1773 by the local fishing community. Dedicated mainly to Hung Shing (God of the South Sea), protector of fishermen and sea traders. It features a traditional two-hall, three-bay layout facing the sea and retains Qing Dynasty relics. Declared a monument in 2014, it remains an important cultural and religious site.

Ap Lei Chau — the wet market

This popular wet market is located just a short walk from the temple. It is known for some of the freshest seafood in Hong Kong, thanks to its proximity to the harbour and fishing boats. It offers an authentic local experience with affordable, high-quality seafood meals, live seafood, fish, meat, and vegetables…

At Hong Kong a la carte we are always truly delighted to take part in projects like this—projects that help highlight the potential of Hong Kong for visitors, while presenting the city through both places and people.

We can’t wait to see this new episode and share the stories captured on location. Stay tuned!
